The Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff is a perfect stop for anyone who loves trains, history, or just learning something new.
All Aboard! A Day at the Arkansas Railroad Museum
A trip to the Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff is definitely an adventure worth taking! My husband and I and our young daughter recently spent some time exploring this museum and it was such a fun experience for all of us.
I definitely recommend this museum for all ages.
This is a free hands on museum where you can climb aboard many of the old trains and imagine what it would have been like to experience the golden age of train travel.
Stepping Into History
From the moment we walked in, the sheer size of the locomotives left us in awe. The museum is housed in a historic train maintenance facility, and it’s packed with real-life trains, artifacts, and interactive exhibits.

How did the Arkansas Railroad Museum Begin
The Arkansas Railroad Museum began due to an effort by the Cotton Belt Historical Society to save the last steam-powered locomotive built in Arkansas. This locomotive had been retired due to being replaced by a diesel burning locomotive.
It was located in a city park where it had been left to rust and be spray painted.
Volunteers, many of whom were retired workers from the Cotton Belt railroad, came together in the early 1980’s to save and restore this grand locomotive.
Gradually the restoration of this one piece of machinery became an entire museum!
Where is the Arkansas Railroad Museum Located?
The museum is located in the old Cotton Belt shops in a building constructed between 1882 and 1894.
The address is: 1700 Port Rd, Pine Bluff, AR
Be sure to check their Facebook Page for opening days and hours and special events.
The Star of the Show: Engine 819
A definite highlight of our visit was seeing Engine 819, the one that started it all. This is a massive steam locomotive built right in Pine Bluff.
It is beautifully restored piece of history, and standing next to it really puts into perspective just how powerful these machines were.
There are so many engines and train cars on display as well including several vintage cabooses which were incredibly interesting.
Climbing, Exploring, and Imagining
One of the best things about this museum is that it’s hands-on.
Unlike some places where you can only look at the exhibits from a distance, here you can actually step inside the trains, touch the controls, and see what it might have felt like to be a conductor or engineer.
My little conductor-in-training was fascinated by all the levers, buttons, and gauges inside the cab of a steam engine!
More Than Just Trains
Beyond the locomotives, the museum also has displays featuring railroad tools, uniforms, and even old ticket stubs—little details that bring the past to life.
My daughter especially enjoyed the model train setup. She loved watching the trains chug along in a miniature world.
Why You Should Visit
Whether you’re a history buff, a train lover, or just looking for a unique family outing, the Arkansas Railroad Museum is a must-visit.
It’s a place where you can learn, explore, and let your imagination run wild.
Plus, the volunteers who run the museum are incredibly knowledgeable and eager to share their passion for rail history.
So, if you’re ever in the Pine Bluff area, grab your conductor’s hat and hop aboard for a journey through time.
