Tips For Chasing Waterfalls in Arkansas
Choose the Right Season For Waterfall Chasing in Arkansas
It is important to understand that most of the Arkansas waterfalls are wet weather falls.
In other words, they either quit flowing or slow to a trickle during dryer seasons. The dryer season is typically the summer and fall in Arkansas.
In general, waterfall chasing season tends to be from late winter through early summer. But it can also include anytime when the state has had a time of good soaking rainfalls.
All Arkansas waterfalls are most spectacular during rainy times.
Research the Best Waterfalls and Plan Your Adventure
Arkansas is home to hundreds of waterfalls, each with its own unique beauty. You can decide which you want to visit based on the height of the waterfall or the difficulty of the hike or the proximity to where you live.
There are some that we love that barely even require a hike!
There is one resource that every Arkansas waterfall chaser MUST have and that is Tim Ernst Book of Arkansas Waterfalls. Tim Ernst is truly the guru of Arkansas hiking and every Arkansas adventurer needs his books.

Where are MOST Arkansas Waterfalls?
Arkansas waterfalls are mostly located in the mountains of the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas as well as North Central Arkansas or the Ouachita Mountains in portions of southwest Arkansas .
You might even be able to see several falls in a single day if you plan in advance!
Be Prepared for the Weather
Arkansas is a four season state.
WINTER: You might be surprised to learn that many locals especially love hiking in the winter. During the winter the views are magnificent and the state often has mild days. However, when it does become really cold, there isn’t much that is more magical than seeing a frozen waterfall! If we have a few cold days you should definitely bundle up and go waterfall chasing.
SPRING: Spring is prime waterfall chasing season in Arkansas. Do be aware that we occasionally have severe weather during this time of year so check forecasts before you go. are both beautiful here.
FALL: Fall is usually dryer and not the best season for waterfalls. However, if we do have rain during this time I would say to count yourself incredibly lucky if you are able to view an Arkansas waterfall combined with colorful foliage.
SUMMER: Honestly, unless there is an unusual mild or overcast day I really don’t recommend hiking Arkansas in the summer. The heat and the humidity are daunting. But if you do…prepare yourself with plenty of water.
Be Prepared for the Bugs (and other creatures)
There are plenty of ticks, mosquitos and other tiny creatures that you might encounter when hiking. In fact, one thing that Arkansans love about winter hiking is the lack of bugs!
I would definitely suggest to use bug spray in all other seasons.
We do have bears. We also have wild hogs. And we do have snakes. However, if you are on one of our well-trodden paths your odds are small of encountering anything dangerous. Just be aware and watch where you are stepping.
I’d be WAY more concerned about ticks!
Have the Proper Equipment
If you are planning to go waterfall chasing in Arkansas you will want to have the proper gear.
Our terrain tends to be rocky and occasionally steep. It helps to have some sturdy hiking shoes. You may also have to step through creeks so I really like to have waterproof shoes.
A walking stick is really helpful especially when traipsing through streams on slippery rocks.
Bring plenty of water, maybe a few snacks, something to take photos of the beauty around you. You will probably want to bring your phone with a downloaded map because cell service is likely to be either unreliable or nonexistent.
Prioritize Safety
While chasing waterfalls is exciting, safety should always come first.
- Watch your footing – Rocks near waterfalls are often VERY slick. Leaves on the ground can be very slippery as well. We have many high, rocky cliffs in this state. Please be careful and stay away from the edges.
- Be mindful of water levels – Heavy rains can make crossings dangerous.
- Avoid climbing near the falls – Many injuries occur when hikers are trying to climb up or down or around a waterfall.
- Let someone know your plans – If venturing into remote areas, always inform a friend or family member of your route.
Respect Nature
Preserving Arkansas’ natural beauty ensures that future generations can enjoy it, too. Follow Leave No Trace principles:
- Stay on marked trails to protect fragile ecosystems.
- Pack out what you bring in – Never leave trash behind.
- Don’t leave your mark – Please don’t spray paint, dig into the rocks, etc.
- Respect wildlife and keep a safe distance from animals. We do have wild animals in our forests…including snakes. Step carefully.
- Avoid disturbing the falls – Don’t alter rocks or structures around the falls or in the streams.
- Keep your music to yourself – Nobody cares if you want to listen to music on your earbuds, but don’t blast it for the rest of the world to hear. Some people go out into nature to hear the sounds of nature.
Plan for Adventure
Waterfall chasing can be part of a larger Arkansas adventure. Consider pairing your hikes with:
- Camping at or visiting one of Arkansas’ many state parks.
- Floating the Buffalo National River for stunning views of towering bluffs.
- Exploring nearby caves like Blanchard Springs Caverns or the Wild Cave at Lost Valley.
- Enjoying small-town charm in places like the Ozark Mountain town of Jasper or the Ouachita Mountain town of Mena.
